Last Sighting: near Damascus, Virginia on 4/30/00 Sighted By: Michelle Cook, Means: Phone I received a phone call from Luke on Sunday, April 30th. He was in the Damascus area. I know that several other people received phone calls, and that Luke gained access to the internet -- several more people talked with him on AOL Instant Messenger. Luke's been making good progress, recovering from the earlier obstacles he encountered (boot problems and a blizzard being the worst of them). He's now walked about 450 miles (doesn't that just make your feet ache thinking of it?), which means he's completed about 1/5 of the trail! Huzzah, Luke! He's certainly enjoying himself, and talked a lot about the sights he's seen. I didn't think to ask any Trail-oriented questions that might interest you all, such as his current pack-weight, his average miles per day, or anything like that. I'll try to remember next time. If there are any questions you all want to know, please let me know, and I'll ask him when he calls. |

Sighted By: Caitlin
Feeley
Means: Instant Messenger Luke signed in at a youth hostel (it had a hot tub as well as Internet access...lucky bastid!). He told me he was well, had not been eaten by bears, and that the bear bell I gave him was driving him nuts. (Bear bells are obnoxious little clip on bells that keep bears away. I had one on my bookbag all through high school...and there were no bears there. See, it works.) My buddy Mike Palmer from Vassar College was hiking in South Carolina over spring break (mid-march) and reported seeing a ridiculously tall, skinny guy with no hair hiking alone. Next time I hear from Luke, I'll try to confirm the sighting. |
